i don't want to spend a ton of time blogging but i don't want to get back-logged w/ a ton of pics... so this will be a shorthand version of the past couple of days...
first---rewind to the fiasco that happened tuesday nite before we left.... i got home from work around 3. laura stayed so i could finish packing. got that done, she left, and it was pouring rain so brax and i met jace outside to jump in some puddles. (got a ton of cute pics from this but they're on computer at home-post later) we came in the garage to take of his water-logged galoshes and his rain coat. i sat him on the bottom step of the stairs going into the house and removed the boots, shaking the water out onto the garage floor. big mistake. i turned to my right to set his boots on the shoe rack to dry, and before i even got them up there i heard his head smack the concrete. i told myself not to over-react, that he has a hard skull like his momma. picked him up, went in to get ice pack. then i saw the blood dripping out of his ear canal.
ok, blood out of ear canal, not good. mike's at work, it's 5pm, pedo office is closed. called 911. i knew that this would bring on a HUGE production of police, fire dept and ambulance, but i didn't know what else to do. within minutes, they were there, and brax was NOT happy to see them. i have to say, they were SO incredibly sweet, helpful and calm. (i did manage to hold it together, believe it or not!) they recommended that we go to children's mercy (since the regular hospitals won't take pedo emergencies) and they also suggested that i NOT drive him by myself (not only due to the possibility of a head injury, but also because it was pouring down rain AND rush hour). i knew that an ambulance ride wouldn't be cheap, but i wasn't about to risk having brax sieze or pass out in the back of my car on the way there. so we loaded up and boarded the "bus." again, brax was NOT excited about this adventure. he cried (mad cry, not hurt cry) for the first 20-30 min, but then relaxed and enjoyed some kix and m&m's.
mike met us at cmh downtown. brax was remarkably calm at this point. i like to think it's due to the discussion we had in the ambulance. i tried to explain what was happening to him, and also what would happen next. i think he got it.
they got us in a room quickly, and the resident was in shortly thereafter. he was SO good. normally brax FREAKS anytime we have to have his ears checked, but this doc took his time and showed brax his ear-checker thing on his fingers before he started tugging on his ears. brax was great the entire time we were in the er (probably about 2 hours?) we sat and rocked and watched tv, he just kept saying he wanted to go home and eat and go nite nite. me too, buddy. me too!
finally got home around 8:45 (wayyyyyyy past his bedtime), ate meat sticks (his request), quick bath and he was out like a lite at 9:30. i was only slightly bummed that i didn't get any pictures of our adventure. it actually crossed my mind to throw my camera in my purse on the way out the door, but i thought they might call child services on me if i started snapping away like the paparazzi.
i kept checking on brax thru the nite, worried about his "head trauma," but he was fine. slept like normal, and was in a good mood wed. morning. daddy dropped us off at the airport, we unloaded our cargo at the curbside checkin and the rest was a breeze. brax immediately met a friend, evan (5 yrs old) while we waited to board. evan was so sweet to share his toys and food (donut holes!!!) with brax.
we were lucky enough to be one of the first ones on the plane. we got a whole row to ourselves, about 5 rows from the front...... until some old fart decided to plop down next to us!!! i mean really, who in their right mind would voluntarily sit in our row, when there was a plane full of empty seats behind us???? apparently he didn't get the memo---mothers flying alone with small children don't want company. i do not want to chitty chat, i do not want to have to crawl over you to get out. i do not want to fight my toddler to keep his body parts away from you. i do not want to have to have to continuously apologize for cheerios being thrown in your lap, any smells that may child may emit, or incessant fits of crying. i thought by changing brax's diaper right there in our seats, i might be able to scare the man off. but nooooooo. he didn't mind one bit. after the everyone had boarded and been seated, there where still several spots available, even up in the front of the plane where we were. i politely asked the man if he would mind moving to the empty seat across from us, after qualifying my request with "It's not that you smell or anything, but...." he kindly obliged.
so with a whole row to ourselves, we cozied up for the almost 4 hr flight. we took off at 10:45. brax chatted with evan (who sat behind us) for awhile, then ate his little lunch i packed. he kept wanting to turn around and stand up in the seat to see what evan was doing, but finally agreed to sit and watch "cars" on the dvd player billy let us borrow. he snuggled up next to me and was out by 12:30 (right on time!) but only slept for about 45 minutes. better than nothing, i suppose. he fussed for a bit when he woke up, but was appeased with some goldfish crackers. we landed at 12:15 cali time.
brax slept on the way home in the car, and then explored gramps and yaya's house. more pics on that to follow!
here's just day one...
